In our 20 weeks travelling America, we covered all 48 mainland states, 39 cities and drove well over 13,650 miles.
That’s Lands End to John O’Groats 16 times, for all the UK residents out there. 116 and a half times round the M25, but with decidedly better views.
This is a week of people doing more; of going out of their way, of inviting us to stay, of strangers reaching out to us and offering us dinner, of new friends offering us a place to stay further on in the trip.
Put your fate in the hands of a stranger and they just might surprise you. People are kind, people are generous and people want to help.
Ten years ago I blitzed £4,000 on a 4 week trip to the USA.
Planning for the pretenniless trip has made spending that amount of money seem completely insane but at the time I didn’t think twice about it. I didn’t question spending my money like I was rollin’ in it. If I could have seen myself ten years on, travelling around the States spending not a single cent, hitchhiking, couchsurfing and dumpster diving for food, I would’ve thought I’d lost it in my old age.
