Week 11 started crazy and ended in the most relaxing way possible.
We learned a lot about Vegas, a lot about Arizona, and confirmed that we both love the mountains and nature far, FAR more than the desert and cities. No surprises there. What did surprise us though is the lengths people will go to to help us out, and the power of having someone ‘vouch’ for you…

This week we travelled down Route 1 from Big Sur down to San Diego.
We’d realised that contrary to our expectations, California is NOT easy to hitch and although this popular route is flooded with tourists, they are mostly American tourists raised to fear hitchhikers, not hippies as we’d imagined to find along this route.

We split week nine into two parts because so many people helped us this week! We managed to remember a few more names for the second part of this week…

The week of no names. We feel terrible when we don’t remember people’s names. You might think “why don’t you write them down!” and I’m not making excuses but this week we had a lot of rides, we ate very little and we slept very little, and it was extremely hot.

Every week seems to provide endless examples of the kindness of strangers but this week we really saw how strangers can become friends in no time at all, and unfortunately how you shouldn’t count your chickens before they’re hatched…
Week Eight marked the beginning of our trip down the West Coast – the ‘second quarter’ of our journey across the north, down the west, along the south and up the east back to Boston, and we had a pretty interesting (and amazing!) welcome…

This week is an easy post to write.
Unlike other weeks, where we’ve had countless lifts and hosts and general ‘helpers’, this week we have just ONE person to thank (well, almost.)

I’d be lying if I said a near-death experience had been part of the plan all along.
Lilly and I have often discussed, and often been asked, exactly what situation would be regarded as extreme enough for us to spend money. We’re both resolute: it would take a medical emergency of drastic proportions for us to part with a penny of cash. Life-on-the-line type stuff. My, how we joked. Isn’t it funny how, seemingly no matter what, gender is used as a reason to insist you can’t do something that someone else is doing.
Women will fight tooth and nail to insist that women can do anything that a man can do, then use the fact they’re a woman as a reason to not do something. Men will accept their position of privilege in the world, yet insist that our journey is only possible because we don’t possess a penis. (Nope, not even one.)

This is a week of people doing more; of going out of their way, of inviting us to stay, of strangers reaching out to us and offering us dinner, of new friends offering us a place to stay further on in the trip.
Put your fate in the hands of a stranger and they just might surprise you. People are kind, people are generous and people want to help.

Sometimes we find ourselves in a location we hadn’t planned to stop in. Sometimes this means we find ourselves unsure of quite where we’re going to be sleeping that night.
Sure, we have a tent, but in the middle of a city that isn’t always the best of options…Not that our end decision was necessarily a great decision either!
