Isn’t it funny how, seemingly no matter what, gender is used as a reason to insist you can’t do something that someone else is doing.

Women will fight tooth and nail to insist that women can do anything that a man can do, then use the fact they’re a woman as a reason to not do something. Men will accept their position of privilege in the world, yet insist that our journey is only possible because we don’t possess a penis. (Nope, not even one.)

We get it. All genders have obstacles to think about when it comes to hitch hiking and couchsurfing and generally ‘putting themselves out in the world’, but none is a reason to say something is impossible. Quite the opposite.

Hopefully, being day 83, state 29 and well over 8,000 miles since we have spent a single cent, we can put to rest any claims that this trip isn’t possible as a woman. It certainly is.

Don’t get us wrong. This trip is hard work. It takes will power and resilience and patience and intelligence. When it’s said it’s only possible because of our gender, it belittles our efforts and attributes our success to men.

As for being a man on this journey, we’ve heard so many “it’s because you’ve got tits” comments or similar, we’ve decided to provide a little light reading of three men taking on similar adventures. It’s a shame we have to do this – to prove men have “done it too” – but it’s apparently necessary.

It can be dangerous to be a woman on the road. Men can be considered dangerous when they’re on the road. Both meaningful obstacles. Neither renders a trip impossible.

Moneyless Across Country

It was whilst we planned our own adventure that we came across the website of a certain Rob Greenfield. Rob has travelled – completely moneyless – to many different places on various different adventures. Check out his website for a whole load of moneyless trips, or watch his Discovery Channel show: Free Ride.

Craigslist Joe

Also whilst in the planning stages of this trip, we learned of ‘Craigslist Joe’, a guy who had lived for 30 days using nothing but Craigslist to get by. In that time he travelled the country, made a host of friends, volunteered for food and completed his month without money. You can watch the documentary online.

Cross-Country Tinder

We’ve mentioned this guy before, on our own Tinder: Not Just For Sex post, but we’ll put the link here too. He used Tinder to find people to take him thousands of miles across the US.

And remember, these are just three guys who’ve achieved enough media attention that we know about them.

There are plenty of instances of others doing it with less fanfare, plenty of other travellers we’ve met on the road – of both genders – and plenty of kickass women taking on trips of epic proportions without batting an eyelid. (Our idol is the brilliant Iris Veldwijk – eternal, worldwide, solo hitchhiker)

With awareness of your position and an ability to adapt to different situations, you can do anything you damn well please.

Don’t ever let your penis, or lack thereof, hold you back from doing what you want to do.

We’d also love for you to follow our journey by subscribing, and please share with anyone you think would like it too. Additionally, you can catch us on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter!
