We couldn’t believe our luck: two e-tickets for a megabus, Milwaukee to Minneapolis, with our name on them. We had argued against James buying them, but he absolutely insisted. What a dream.
We were staying with Couchsurfing hosts Melissa and Josh on the other side of town and with heavy bags we figured it would probably take us 45 minutes to get to the bus station. We decided to leave at 9.30am to give ourselves AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE.
So of course, it all went wrong.

The generosity of people this week has been mind blowing. There’s times when we feel a little worn out, a little anxious about who our next ride or host is going to be, but weeks like this make it all worthwhile.
Everyone has an opinion on places to see and places to skip in the states (and around the world!), and lots of people had said that there ‘wasn’t much in the Dakotas’. If we weren’t doing this trip we may have been inclined to believe them, but by embracing whatever comes our way and setting out to see all the states, including the ones that others think we should miss, we’ve really been opened up to such beauty in so many unexpected places.
Without further ado, a thank you to some of the beautiful people in those beautiful places.

Week Three has been surreal to say the least. It seems that whatever we wish for comes true!
It has seen us miss a Megabus then catch it up four hours into its journey, zoom across a lake in a boat at sunset to get a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, kayak through a storm, shot a whiskey pickle chaser in Fargo and drive through the night in a truck singing along to great music and listening to Jamie Foxx’s explicit comedy radio station!
By the end of the week we realised (for you stat-lovers) that we’d hit 29% of the states in 15% of our time – pretty good going!
Here’s so much thanks to y’all that helped us out this week. We honestly can’t thank you enough. Continue reading “Week Three: Thank You.”
Week two has been a whirlwind and, as I sit here deep into week three, I can’t believe (again) how much time has passed.
Stay with me, because I predict this to be a recurring theme.
We have so much to be thankful for in week two, and we had so much fun: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (we “recycled” wristbands from people who were leaving), Karaoke, a Doors Tribute Act, Continue reading “Week Two: Thank You.”
Everyone told us not to go to Detroit.
It’s too dangerous, they said. Too hostile, they claimed. Too rough, they warned. So we stuck out our thumbs and hitched our way there.
We were picked up by three guys in a pickup truck, and told them we were heading for 1 E Montana, Detroit. They looked up the location with stony faces. “You can’t be going there…We’re not dropping you off and letting you hitch or walk the rest of the way – we’ll take you to the door”. Fine by us.
